Understanding the Click Flows Report
PRO plans and above
What You are Seeing
- Pathways (Lines): Each line represents the sequence of pages visited by users that eventually convert. When you select a specific conversion (conv1, conv2, conv3, conv4, or conv5), the graph shows the user journey only up to the point that conversion occurred, then continues so that you can see what visitors do AFTER converting.
- Nodes (Boxes): Each node corresponds to a page in the user's journey. The size of a node reflects the number of converters that passed through that page. While it is possible to display the total page visits, doing so would overshadow the conversion data, so this report focuses solely on converter traffic.
- Conversion Events: The point at which the conversion occurs is clearly indicated and highlighted in the specific conversion color. This helps you understand exactly where and when a conversion happens along the user’s pathway.
- Hover Details: When you hover over a node or connection, detailed information is displayed, such as:
- Over a node: See the total number of converters that arrived at that page and the number who proceeded to convert.
- Over a line: View the number of users transitioning between two specific pages on their way to converting.
Key Insights You Can Gain
- Conversion Journey Visualization: See the exact paths users take that lead to conversions, allowing you to analyze which routes are most effective.
- Optimizing Conversion Funnels: By isolating the journey up to the conversion event, you can pinpoint which steps in your funnel are working well and which might need improvement.
- Path Simplification: Identify unnecessarily long or complex user journeys. Even though the complete session might continue after a conversion, the report helps you focus on the critical steps leading to the conversion.
- Multiple Conversion Types: Use the select list above the graph to view the click path for a specific conversion (conv1, conv2, conv3, conv4, or conv5) or all conversions at once. This flexibility lets you tailor your analysis to each conversion type or compare them side by side.
What This Report Does Not Show
- Post-Conversion Behavior: This report stops displaying the user journey once the conversion event is reached. It does not provide details on what happens after the conversion.
- Non-Conversion Traffic Relationships: Unlike broader navigation or click flow reports, this view is focused solely on paths that end in a conversion event.
- Deep-clicks: In order to keep the display manageable, we only look at the first twenty clicks of the user's path. Conversions that occur further than this are not shown.
Tips for Using This Report
- Monitor Conversion Efficiency: Compare the number and sequence of interactions that lead to different conversion types. Use this insight to streamline the journey to your most important conversion events.
- Identify Bottlenecks: Look for pages or transitions where many users drop off before converting. These might be areas where you can optimize or remove friction.
- Test Changes in Navigation: If you update your site’s navigation or call-to-action placements, use this report to see how those changes impact the conversion pathways.
- Tailor Marketing Strategies: Understanding the common paths to conversion can help you adjust your marketing or on-site content to guide users more effectively toward conversion points.
